Start here: a split lobe will not heal on its own
Most splits happen gradually rather than suddenly. A piercing worn with heavy or hoop earrings slowly elongates downward over months or years until only a thin bridge of tissue remains, which then tears with a small pull. Once the edges have healed over separately, each side is covered with skin, so the two edges cannot join on their own.
Repair requires trimming the healed edges back to raw tissue so they can knit together properly, which is why this is a genuinely surgical procedure rather than something that can simply be taped shut or left alone to heal. Understanding this clearly before your first consultation avoids the disappointment of discovering, often years later, that time alone will never fix a lobe that tore long ago.
