Surgery is regulated by the Ministry of Health (Sağlık Bakanlığı). Since 2017 any facility treating international patients must hold a Health Tourism Authorisation Certificate (Uluslararası Sağlık Turizmi Yetki Belgesi), which is tied to a licensed hospital or medical centre and lists the intermediary agencies allowed to work with it.
Surgeons must be registered with the Turkish Medical Association and hold the specialist title in Plastic, Reconstructive and Aesthetic Surgery, awarded after a five-year residency and a board examination. Many also hold the European Board (EBOPRAS) fellowship and are members of the Turkish Society of Plastic, Reconstructive and Aesthetic Surgeons (TPRECD) and ISAPS.
Private hospitals are inspected and graded by the Ministry; the largest groups also hold Joint Commission International (JCI) accreditation. Ask any clinic for its authorisation certificate number and check the operating surgeon's name against the society directories linked below.
Citizens of the EU, the UK, the US and many other countries can enter Turkey visa-free for tourist stays of up to 90 days in a 180-day period; some nationalities need an e-Visa, which is issued online within minutes. Check the Ministry of Foreign Affairs site for your passport before booking.
Istanbul is served by two airports (IST on the European side, SAW on the Asian side), Antalya by AYT, Izmir by ADB and Ankara by ESB, all with direct flights from most European cities. Clinics normally include airport transfers in their packages.
Take out travel insurance that explicitly covers complications of elective surgery abroad; standard policies exclude them. Bring your medical history, a list of current medication and any previous operation reports in English.
